THE EVOLUTION OF MOBILE PHONES IN THE FUTURE

Category:

Mobile phones are regarded as one of the most innovative pieces of technology after the PCs. This innovative mode of communication can be used for different activities which include voice calls, video calls, SMS, entertainment, internet and much more. Technology evolves constantly so as the various makes and types of mobile phones. The adoption of internet mobile has reached its peak with about 40million subscribers in the mobile market in the USA which is estimated to be 15.6%, followed by the UK with approximately 12.9% and then Italy with an average of 11.9% (Biz sugar, 2010).

According to a CNN article, in the near future, mobile phones could be used for a wider range of activities in addition to what they are used for now such as a new possible form of identification, access to subways and clip coupons, mainly in the US (although previous trials have not been successful so far). On the other hand, a survey conducted by Forrester Research on Japanese mobile phone users already shows that 15% of these users already use their mobile/wireless phones to make payments and in-store purchases. This information supports the idea that mobile /wireless phones in the near feature will be as pragmatic as the PC and even more (CNN, 2009).

Mobile phones have their advantages and disadvantages whereas the advantages surpass the disadvantages. These disadvantages are:

● The cancer of the brain.
● Mobile phone radiation.

Mobile /wireless phones could be said to have the following advantages which can outwit the use of PC in about 10years to come. These advantages are as follows:

Instant access and convenience: Mobile phones are convenient due to their portability unlike PC’s and laptops that are not handy. Due to their portability, the user can access emails, get updates as well as network with their mobiles anywhere and anytime. With the introduction of the 3G network, video calling from any location has been facilitated. The use of GPRS service on the mobile phone can be linked with the navigation system which can stand in for a Tom-Tom navigator (Sat-Nav).

Web access via mobiles

No fixed location: Mobile/ wireless phones can be accessed from any location due to their portability and easy internet access. This is to say that mobile/wireless phones have gained the freedom to be used in different locations at different times and this in turn reduces the stress for those who are caught up in travel delays, traffic or lost in a city.

The wireless services associated with mobile phones makes it convenient to communicate even in the most rural area of the community.

Personalization: There is easier identification and location by its users. The user can download the functions deemed necessary and in the way he or she wants the function to be. These functions can be in the form of ringing tones, pictures, games, alarm, videos and some internet sites (Skype, weather forecast, bible, face book, etc). For instance, the German AKA-AKI service provider permitted its users to freely download applications, which pings to another member’s phone through Bluetooth hence permitting them to identify the other user and possibly networking (Times online,2008).

Can be used to watch anything the user wishes to watch (e.g., Mobile T.V, YouTube Videos etc).

Privacy: With mobile/ wireless phones, one can access social network sites like twitter, face book, Bebo, etc. People can also get a job, ticket, do telephone or online banking /online banking or sales alerts from different organizations concerning a recent bonanza or offer.

The rapid practical aspect of the mobile phone will most probably out rule the PC, but not completely which is because the larger memory capacity of PCs will still be needed for organizations over that of mobile phones.

Agree with you. The mobile phone market has been growing and developing streamly fast... new features and so many advantages... but I know so many locations in the world without wireless conection neither phone network...so for those who know the existence of this kind of technology buy simply hasn't got access to it,will remain with their old computer and their main land access just in case they want to check their email...

Well most of the areas without wireless network and mobile phone network also have the same problem with land access but most network providers are working to have their mobile networks everywhere and by then everyone will be able to have the 3G or 3.5G network on their phones no matter where they are and that would be make it easy for them to access internet from any where thus making the personal computer irrelevant

It is amazing to know that Mobile phone could perform same functions as our TV's at home. I definitely agree with you that very soon, mobile phone will outwit other IT gadgets. More researchers are working endlessly on mobile phone research. I absolutely agree wit u guys.

With the introduction of 3G network in most part of the world, the mobile phone will definitely overtake the other gadgets. Also, if am able to watch my favourite programs on my phone then it will outdo the tv sets.

I agree with you guys to some extent, we can not do away with the PC, there are certain tools and applications that the PC has that the mobile phone can or may not handle. In as much as 3G and 4G is swiftly expanding, the challenge of speed and data handling and storage still remain fandamental issues. Though they are portable in size, they are limited in terms of functunality vs a PC. The PC is here for the long run and no matter how advanced the mobile phone will become one of its greatest challenge will be data storage as compared to the PC.

Personally I don`t agree that mobile phones will surpass the laptops because if I`m at home even if have the very last I-phone in the world I still will use my laptop or IDTV instead of mobile phones ( I don`t want to put glasses yet :). If I`m out probably I`ll use the mobile phones, but most of the time we suppost to work, drive, eat, make a conversations, shopping and many other thinks if you know what I mean. I heavily use internet at home, not out.

I stand by the argument that mobile phones will surpass PC's because the mobile phones of the future will have intelligence meaning that they can be able to think, thus being able to read your daily dairy on the phone and making sure that you do not miss a meeting or a flight, in the case of a flight being cancelled your phone would be able to alert you of the flight cancellation because it would be constantly checking with the airline company.

Mobile phones would be used as identity cards thus enabling you to open doors to your house or office, again the mobile phone would be used to make money transactions this above examples are proof that the mobile phone would not only be used as a communication gadget, but as a wallet and money transfer device. And as times goes we tend to want the easy way out because we do not have a lot of time on our hands and if any technology comes and is able to lessen the time we do things then we adapt it immediately example the microwave, so the mobile phone of the future would be able to help us do most of the things we do on the PC's thus leaving us with little or no time to go on the PC

Looking at convenience we do not think people will opt for a mobile phone rather than for a pc. We do not argue the fact that a mobile phone is a useful tool for ‘on-the-road’ applications but, although physical limitations makes it difficult to carry around a laptop, we think people will still prefer using their pc to look up information. This mostly because of the screen size and the convenience of a keyboard. The portability issue will probably influence new pc’s and their size as we can already see with the introduction of the mini-laptop, more and more people can be seen in the street carrying around a mini-laptop. PC World devoted an article about the Mini-laptops being among the hottest new products and gave advise about choosing the right one.

Thanks for your comment and also for acknowledging the fact that mobile phones are useful tools for 'on-the-road' application, but from our conclusion you could see where we stated that PCs have a larger memory and therefore will not be discarded to replace a mobile phone.
